It is said that, ‘he who loves a book will never want a faithful friend, a wholesome counselors, a cheerful companion, an effectual comforter. By study, by reading, by thinking, one may innocently divert and pleasantly entertain oneself, as in all weathers, as in all fortunes.’

With television imposing on the day-to-day lives of our people, the common allegation we heard over the past 10-15 years was that people, especially the younger generation, were walking away from books. Not only authors, even literary experts accuse the younger generations of becoming an insensitive, uncreative and inartistic bunch with barren souls. But is it the real case? Have we, the younger generation, given up on reading – especially Literature?
I find most in my generation read a lot. In fact there are people who simply fell in love with the smell of a book even. Though our generation thoroughly attracted to internet be it facebook, twitter, gtalk, skype and we are addicted to DVDs nothing is more pleasurable like reading a book. It gives your mind the freedom and power of imagination.
Just because the younger generation does not go for printed books, one cannot call them barren souls.
Even though they do not read books, the younger generation is high-tech and IT savvy. We have to accept that television has been replaced by the internet. I personally know that, there are a number of youth who make it a point to watch good artistic movies once or twice a week. They do not restrict themselves simply to watch the movie. They even hunt for the books those films were based on, and build interesting discussions on the movie. Just because they do not opt for the traditional book reading, you can’t point a finger at them. It’s just that their media is different from that of the older generation. The older generation has the habit of believing that the best is what they did. But the truth is not that. We have been telling this for the last decade or two. But have we ended printing books? No, we keep on writing and keep on publishing, and the books too keep on selling. Therefore, we cannot say that Literature books are in the process of becoming isolated.
